To “abide” means to remain, to continue, to stay. Does that mean that one who “abides” is passive, stuck, unable or unwilling to change? No. The ways in which this word has been used also describe dwelling, persevering, enduring, continuing, sojourning.
Abiding means that we find a strong and steady place within ourselves—a place supported and sustained by our connection with the Holy. From this place, we take courage. We take stock, we ask questions, we explore, we make decisions. We also experience our feelings, our history, our gratitude, and our hope.
To abide means to be faithful and steadfast through all the conditions and events of our lives. To abide in the Presence of the Holy is to experience the trust, peace, and deep confidence that will hold us steady. Faithful abiding comes about from the consciousness and love with which we do our inner spiritual work.
